Yagan Yagan was born around 1795, the son of a respected aboriginal elder, Midgeroroo, of the Nyoongah people. He lived in the south west region of Western Australia. For the first nine months of settlement at the Swan River, things were great between the settlers and natives. As Aboriginal tribes realized that they liked the look of the colonies thoughts, they began to thieve and kill livestock and the food supplies were nowhere to be found by the settlers. Gradually the settlers became aware that the attacks along the Swan River were led by a native aboriginal leader, named Yagan.
Due to the deaths of many settlers in Yagan’s attacks, a reward was offered to find him (Yagan) dead or alive. As Yagan was found, he was known as a threat among the white community which caused him to be beheaded.
Yagan’s head was taken to London where it was on exhibition as an anthropological curiosity. It spent over 100 years in storage at a museum in London before being buried in an unmarked grave in 1964.
